Looking for any info related to the Bairds of Charlotte St in Ayr.
They owned a boarding house ?, finishing school in Charlotte St, in the era of 1820 - 80, I believe it was demolished, but not sure. The house was closer to the main road than the water.
Any relatives can drop me a line or any locals who can tell me more about Charlotte Street in general.
I have most of the census returns, thanks.

But I found this website when I was looking at Bairds, it is fabulous for anyone interested in Baird genealogy. The only reference to Charlotte Street is the 1841 census though. There is a forum just for Bairds on here, it may be worth posting your query there as well.

Two direct ancestors of mine died at 2 Charlotte St in 1914, James and Elizabeth Baird.

Also I think his father was John Baird, who married Susannah clephen in 1825

My GGranny Margaret Neilson stayed at that school it's in the 1861 census. I think the Bairds were related to the first wife of John Neilson an engineer and iron founder. He is very famous and his brother James Beaumont Neilson invented the hot blast furnace process in Glasgow. Margaret went there when John died along with her siblings it was part of his will that they be goven £500 and a proper education. I thought the school was number 4. The school also specialised in teaching deaf mute kids. Wasnt it the Lady Jane Hamilton school?
I cant paste for some reason I have in the census listed Grace Baird Head b 1786 age 76 annuitant and her daughter hMary Baird age 42 b 1819 principal of the school

Wow, your Grt Granny is one of my missing branches, I would love to know the next few generations.
You are correct about Margaret Baird being related to my Thomas Baird, she was his sister.
She married John Neilson and had 8 kids, when she died, he married Catherine Twaddle, your Great Grannies mum.
I believe your grt granny had two sisters and a brother.
You need to paste two more messages and then you can pm (private message) me.

or you can look on facebook. There is a closed members page called Descendants of Samuel and Mary Holmes Martin. Look it up and request to join. If you don't have an FB account message me . The point is that I have files on that page that you can access. They are quite extensive. Thanks Paul

I have also recently tracked down the list of attendees at the school. Its stashed in one of the Ayr museums. They said they would come back but they are a little tardy. When I get the information I will send that as well.

You will also see on 1861 census the STEEL girls who are also related. :)
Looks like ggggrt granny Grace Baird, looked after quite a few family members ... 8)
