The following are brothers all born in Rugeley which so far I have been unable to trace in the 1881 census and which may be in the 1861 census for STS.
William Cructhley b 1798
John Crutchley b 1802
Henry Crutchley b 1810
Thomas Crutchley b 1820
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could see if there are any records that may be these people. Clearly they would have their own families by then.
I am also looking for Henry Crutchley b 1823 in Rugeley in the 1861 or 1871 census.
Many thanks.

Many thanks. The 1861 census info was very useful. I think that I have all the 1881 records. The age of Ann, the wife of John Crutchley in the 1861 census is surprising as another Ann is in the 1851 census aged 50. She clearly has died before the 1881 census so could I ask if someone can check 1871 for that family to she if she is still alive then?
Many thanks.

Thomas Crutchley (b 1820) somehow (I don't know how yet but it is possible that he was transported in 1840) got to Albany, Australia where in 1847 he married Emma Sherratt and their first child Harriet was born there in 1848. Between then and 1851 they went back to England and had more children including Henry Crutchley (my great great grandfather) who was born in Cannock, Staffordshire in 1851.

I think I know the family you refer to. Your Thomas was a son of Thomas Crutchley b 1779 in Rugeley and his wife Elizabeth. He had siblings John (1807), Maria (1810), Harriet (1811) and William (1825).
Thomas and Emma Sherratt had 9 children.
Have you found any convict records for Thomas or court calendar for his trial?
What do you know of Emma Sherratt? She was born in Guildford Surrey so how did she get out to Australia?
I would love to know what information you have.

Emma Sherratt was born in Guildford Surrey to Thomas Brooker Sherratt and Amelia Walden. In 1834, her father payed for Emma, her parents and 4 siblings to move to Albany, Western Australia where Thomas Brooker was one of the founders of Albany. In Australia, Emma's parents had several more children until her mother died in 1842. Only one of her brothers married and I have been able to track his children and the children of Emma's sisters in Australia and New Zealand.
I found record of a Thomas Crutchley being transported to New South Wales in 1840 and that he was tried at the Stafford Assizes and sentenced to life, but I still don't know if it is the correct Thomas. I also know that Thomas Brooker Sherratt was a whaler and had a boat, the Emma Sherratt, named after his daughter that he sold around the time of her marriage to Thomas. Also her marriage and the birth of her first child Harriet aren't advertised in the papers whilst her sisters' were.
Hope this helps, Kate

I don't think that this Thomas is the same as yours. I think that the Thomas that married Emma was still in Rugeley in 1841 living in Etching Hill aged 25 with his parents Thomas and Elizabeth Crutchley. 1841 census
HO 107/973/19 folio 57/58
Would be interested in your thoughts re this family to see if uit fits with your known facts of Thomas. In 1861 Emma and Thomas as living again with the same parents and it is clearly your Thomas because Harriet Amelia is with them.

I have Sherratt's from Western Australia in my tree. Amelia Sherratt married a Barrett Bros and the 4 Barrett Bros Amelia and her sister traveled to NZ and settled in Canterbury. There is a write up in the NZ encyclopedia which is on line. Thomas, John, are two of the brothers. I will send more info shortly.
