I'm looking for the birth date of my great grandfather, Alfred Cooper, who was born in Alderton. All the census' show that he was born in 1869. I have looked on 1837 online, and Ancestry.co.uk but cannot find his birth date. Suffolk Records Office searched 1869 for me but also couldn't find anything. London Records Office did a 3 year search (1868 to 1870) and couldn't find anything.
Can anyone help please?

Welcome Marilyn :)
You seem to have done all the right things to try and find Alfred! As it wasn't mandatory to register births until 1874, it is possible that his birth wasn't registered.
The GRO indexes at 1837 online are complete, and if you have searched 5 or 6 years either side of 1869 without success, then I fear that this may be the case with Alfred.

There are some births for a Alfred Robert and Alfred COOPER on FreeBMD in Woodbridge Registration District in 1868 and 1867 which includes Alderton. Have you already checked these?? If you haven't, you could order them with the proviso that you only want them issued if the father's name is George. You would not then be charged the full amount.
Births Jun 1868
COOPER Alfred Robert Woodbridge 4a 647
and another in 1867
Births Jun 1867
Cooper Alfred Woodbridge 4a 636

Many thanks for this. I have already obtained the birth certificate for Alfred Robert born 1868 in Woodbridge, which turned out not to be the one I'm looking for. However, I didn't know about the one born in 1967 as I couldn't find it on Ancestry.co.uk or 1837online either. Will check it out.
Incidentally, his father was George, how did you already know that?
Once again, many thanks.

Hello Bryant
the 1871 census shows the Cooper family as:
George 1823 Shottisham (my great, great grandfather)
Harriet do 1833 Bawdsey
George do 1856 Alderton
William do 1857 Alderton
Ellen do 1859 Alderton
James do 1861 Alderton
Lillie do 1864 Alderton
Harry 1868 Alderton
Alfred do 1869 Alderton (my great grandfather)
They lived at Crown Beck House Cottages, Alderton. George was a Shoemaker
They are also on the 1861 census as:
George 1829 Shottisham
Harriet 1833 Bawdsey
Mary 1855 Bawdsey
George Edward 1856 Bawdsey
William 1857 Bawdsey
Ellen Agusta 1859 Alderton
Henry Arthur 1860 Alderton
Living in Alderton Street, Alderton
However on the 1851 Census, George is listed as being born 1828 in Ramsholt, and he was living in Castle Street, Woodbridge, with the Cook family as a Shoemaker.
George married Harriet Wright on 12 May 1854 in Woodbridge.
On the marriage certificate George's father was Edward Cooper deceased.
I would like to know who George's mother was and whether he had any siblings. I've come to a dead end now that George was not living with his parents in 1841.
Regards

Hello again Bryant
on the 1851 census George is living with:
William Cook 1809 Ufford - Head
Sarah 1822 Bewdley - Wife
John 1834 Hollesley - Son (although unlikely to be Sarah's)
Benjamin 1837 Hollesley - Son (ditto above but possible)
Betsey 1847 Hollesley - Daughter
George Cooper 1828 Ramsholt - Inmate?? but occupation Shoemaker
On the 1841 census I have found a George Cooper - aged 16, plus an Edward Cooper aged 13 living with the Spall family in Boyton. Do you know if that is near to Ramsholt, Shottisham, etc?

Street, Hollesley, Suffolk
William Cook 30 shoe m Y
Sarah " 30 Y
George " 10 Y

I think you need to find this family in 1851 as I firmly believe Edward is the father and the one who died sometime between 1841-1854 when George Cooper married Harriet Wright!
1841..........BAWDSEY, SUFFOLK............HO107/1041/2

Hello Marilyn
I have been watching your topic with much interest as I also have a Cooper that I cannot trace back, who came from the same area.
Robert Cooper (born 1823 Ramsholt). I have traced his marriage, children and all generations onwards but cannot find anything for his birth/parents/siblings.
On all censuses I had seen, Robert lists his birthplace as Ramsholt and I have searched Ramsholt baptism registers extensively for mention of him and have drawn a blank (I also searched surrounding parishes of Alderton, Shottisham and Bawdsey with no luck).
I have not been able to find him in 1841. By 1851 he was married with one child aged 11 months, and living in Ramsholt (although his daughter's birthplace is Alderton). He was not living in Ramsholt in 1841.
This week I saw the 1861 census, and Robert lists his birthplace not as Ramsholt, but Boyton, but I have not had chance to look at Boyton PRs and nor will probably have the opportunity to do so for some time to come :(.
It seems a coincidence that we are both searching for Coopers in this area, and a slight possibility that George and Robert might be brothers!
I don't really have any helpful information to offer you I'm afraid, but will watch this space with interest!
If I do find anything more I'll post a reply.
Kind regards
Anne

Hello Anne, it's very frustrating isn't it? This is some other information I have found out. Not sure if it's connected to either of us but looks interesting.
On the 1841 census I found a Susan Cooper aged 30 with a daughter Harriet aged 7. They were living in Bawdesy with two other widows and their families.
On the 1851 census Susan was aged 43 born in Bawdsey and Harriet aged 17 born in Ramsholt. Living in East Street, Bawdsey.
On 1861 census Susan is now shown as aged 56, Harriet is aged 27, also a widow now named Smith with two children both born in Bawdsey. They are living in Alderton Street, Alderton.
It's quite possible I suppose that Susan is your Robert's mother, given the area. I know that on 1841 census it looks like she could be too young (born 1811) but by the time we get to the 1861 census her birth year is 1805 which would make it feasible. She could also be my William's mother but how we ever get to prove it remains to be seen. I guess the parish records are the answer. I do know that William's father, Edward, died before 1854 but that's about it.
If I find out anything more I will be in touch. Good luck.
Regards

Hello Marilyn
I have some information from Ramsholt and Butley parish registers, but none that I could see which tied into my Robert Cooper's family, but it might be of interest to you.
You are so right about this being frustrating! I have seen PR (fiche) of Robert's marriage at Records Office. but the name of his father is so faded it is impossibe to decipher >:(.
I will send you a PM about the information I have.
Kind regards
Anne
