Looking for information re: Susannah Pontin born October 29, 1757 died October 31 1817. Daughter of William Pontin and Susannah Bastarr. Susannah had at least two base born children Joseph Ponting born 1786 and Henry Harding Ponting born 1779 died 1835. Henry Harding Ponting is my 3rd. Great Grandfather. I would like to try and identify the Father(s) of Henry and Joseph. I am told it was quite common for Mothers to give their base born child their Father's name as a middle name. In Susannah's case her Grandmother was a Harding. Family lore(unreliable) has it that Susannah was a Governess for the Marquess of Ailesbury who had a liason with a visiting Spanish Count(perhaps this was an attempt to mask the embarrassment of an illegitimate child). Any help or directions to sources would be appreciated.

Old post I know but I am also researching this line as my grandmother was Victoria Agatha May Ponting.
The info I have is:-
Suzannah Ponting
Henry Harding Ponting - Rachel Edwards
William Ponting - Elizabeth Wyatt
James Ponting - Sarah Anne Thatcher
William Ponting - Mary Ashton
Victoria Agatha May Ponting
I do not have all the certificates for these people as yet so some of my research may be incorrect.
If anyone has any more information then please let me know

I haven't checked this chat for some time. I would be interested in any information you have for the Pontin(g) line. I have now focused my research on Susannah Pontin b1757 d1817. Susannah had two baseborn sons(Henry Harding Ponting and William Ponting) Some of her son's descendants reverted to the Harding(e) surname. Susannah apparently was in the employ of the Marquess of Aylesbury at Tottenham court(present Earl I see in the news is having financial difficulties). I have checked online summaries of Aylesbury papers and came across some correspondence mentioning a George Hardinge and thought that there may be a connection to my 3rd. Great Grandfather Henry Harding Ponting. There appears to be no mention of significance of Tottenham staff. My research is on Ancestry as PontingsCanada(July2014).

Victoria Agatha May Ponting appears to be a 3rd. cousin.
Suzannah Ponting is 4th. Great Grandmother
Henry Harding Ponting mentioned earlier(is my 3rd. Great Grandfather, he had children with Anne Ponting). Henry Hardings Pontings Grandfather (William Pontn m Susannah Baster is Anne Pontings 2nd. Great Grandfather. Anne does have an interesting past. I can find no record of Anne Ponting formalizing her marriage to Henry Harding Ponting. If anyone has more information please post here.

??? After a web search for my husband's fore-father Ambrose Pontin, came up with 3 references including Charles IX's photo of him! We are Pontin's, my husband being the grandson of George Pontin, born in Aberdare, believed to be the son (or grand son) of Ambrose. He moved to Patchway in Bristol just before WWII after loosing work after a pit strike in the 1930's and was a communist. He must have been born around the turn ofthe century, one of 7 brothers who all returned from WWI. He spent the war as a army groom in Norfolk. He had two daughters, sadly now both deceased and my much younger father - in -law is 75. (Since died).
It is thought that the family originated from Normandy coming to the UK after 1815 - does anyone have any details for us London Pontins
