Hello everyone :)
I have been tracing my ancestors for about 1 year but find that I cannot go any further back than 1871 with the Gynane branch. If anyone could help with a census previous to this I would be very grateful.
The family moved from Ireland to India - why? and then back to England (Shrewsbury) finally settling in Neston Wirral.
Many thanks again.

Hi
Can you post again with the details of the 1871 census, and we will see what can be done to trace them back. Hopefully.

Cheers, The furthest I can go back census wise is the 1891 Census.
Michael Gynane Head 48 1843 Ireland Watchman Chester Neston Cum Parkgate
Catherine Gynane Wife 23 1868 Cheshire Neston
Margaret Gynane Daughter 16 1875 India
Stephen Gynane Son 10 1882 Shrewsbury Shropshire
Michael Stanley Gynane Son 5 1885 Cheshire Neston
Teresa Gynane Daughter 3 1887 Cheshire Neston
Thomas Gynane Son 1 1890 Cheshire Neston
Catherine Gynane Daughter 1m 1891 Cheshire Neston
Michael Gynane senior was married 4 times so the wifes name may be differrent. There was a Bridget, Margaret and Elizabeth.

Hi
It would seem that as Michael cannot be found in England prior to the birth of son Stephan in 1882, he would be still in India and I suspect he was military man. He would of course be back and forth from India during his military service but possibly in between census's.
this is a good guide on how to find details of military records

I could assist with his wifes census details in Cheshire if you required but can't help with Michael, sorry.

I read that many Gynanes are buried in the RC Churchyard at Neston. FreeBMD turns up many Gynanes - all in the Wirral so I suppose that might be Neston. If Michael's gravestone is there it might have details of his place of birth.
Someone named Upton was researching this some years back on Rootsweb.

FYI
1920 US census shows a:
John Gynane, born India in 1866, living in Arizona.
He was in Mesa, which is about 50 miles from me.
Let me know if this is of interest, as I can search the Arizona records more fully.

Many thanks everyone.
I have been to St Winefreds RC church in Neston but without luck, the priest was really helpful though and will get in touch if he finds anything in the archives. Only when I got back did I discover there is another RC church there that I did not search.... doh!!
With regards to John Gynane in Arizona that could be interesting. I have a John in the tree but I thought he was born in 1868 in India but you know who peoples ages/details changed from one census to the next!! It really could be him. I have mine married to Amelia Withers in 1889 they had at least 7 children and were still producing after the 1901 census.
Cheers for your help.

Many thanks for this it certainly does help. You know how frustrating it is when people just disappear so he moved to Canada/America? The little tinkers.
The alternative spelling is interesting as well, when I went to the church in Little Neston the priest their said about the alternative spelling, the family then of course probably couldn't write so the census taker would write what he thought they said. I think the correct spelling was Guinane but written as Gynane and that seemed to stick.
:) Great news this.

This sounds like my Birth family !!! _ Gynane
Will check my files tonight and get back to you. Sometime since I checked, but
