Title: Do anyone know about the Railway Gate Cottage in Redcar?
Post by: Tees on Thursday 10 November 05 06:21 GMT (UK)
Hi Fellow Rootschatters!

Hope you could be able to help me out with this.

I am hoping someone who lives in Redcar would take a photo of the Railway Gate Cottage there. My great-great grandfather George Thompson was a gate-keeper in 1870s.

Also, I would like a photograph of the grave of my great-great grandmother Jane Thompson age 27 who was buried in Redcar, if that is possible.

I would appreciate any information on this cottage. Is there any records on the former inhabitants at this cottage?

I am trying to verify the facts in several certificates I got on my ancestors.

I would be most grateful for any kind of information even your help would be very much welcomed and appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tees

Railway Cottages.
These Buildings were Railway workers Cottages situated close to the convalescent home on the old railway line which is now Queens Street Redcar .When the line was moved they were then dismantled brick by brick and removed to their present position behind Kirkleatham Church.

COULD BE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

Hi Jane & Cath,

What a pleasant surprise to see the replies to this post which I had nearly forgotten about!!  ;D

I will take a look at the certificate but I distinctly remember it just simply stated what I stated here.

But, sorry to inform you that there is no census information on my family as they moved from Yarm, Yorkshire to Redcar for my great great grandmother's health reasons.

As to the cemeteries, I have no idea as to where she was buried. Would the second marriage information be any help to you as it took the place in Redcar? It lists the church.

I think Jane may be buried in the Catholic as she got married in the Catholic Church but her husband was not Catholic (I am not sure about this as I do not have his baptism record--could not find his).

I would be most pleased to receive anything from you from the very villiage (or is it a town now) my ancestors used to live in.

Many, many thanks for your replies as it certainly makes my day!

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Sylvia,

Quite possibly what I am looking for!

My great great grandfather was a railway gatekeeper in Redcar. Naturally, the railway would give him a housing for his wife and children.

Thank you for this information! Hope it will be of help to Cath and Jane.

Kind regards,

Tees

I am happy to meet with Cath and trawl the cemeteries, the other thing you can do is contact the very nice man at Redcar and Cleveland Council, he will, hopefully be able to tell you which cemetery your relation is buried in, with that we can go armed with a digi camera, he will also if you ask, tell you whether or not there is a headstone, if there is not one, please ask him to place a marker on the grave site, I find this man to be most helpful.  I was just at one of the cemeteries last week taking some pics of the Royal Engineer's war graves for their programme.

Tel: (01287) 635426  try this number, the man is called Ian, but you may get someone else, or you can email him

Hi Jane,

Have e-mailed him as you requested. Await his reply with much interest.

Will give you any details if he happens to have them.

She died on 8 June 1876.

Hi Roobarb,

Thank you so much for that interesting website you give me.

It may be what I am looking for--but the death certificate clearly stated the residence was Railway Gate Cottage. I guess it is because of my great great grandfather's position which was the gatekeeper.

Looking forward to further replies to this post.  ;D

Thank you,

Tees

Me again

I had a quick look on some of the sites posted and some I have in my fave's, the railway line has been moved as did the cottages that your rellies lived in, I can pop along to Kirkleatham over the weekend and have a look at the railway cottages and see if there is a plaque or something  ;)

I love it when I can help with something local, and my all time fave is grave hunting - boys and OH think I have lost the plot  ;D  Let me know what the reply is re the grave and I will go, unless Cath wants to,

just had a thought railwaygate cottages redcar in 1870 would not have being the ones we are thinking of as the ones in kirkleatham were from coatham back in 1870 they were two separate towns ,so i had a quick look on the redcar census and there is a railwaygate cottage in redcar and if it is the same property it still stands on redcar lane were the railway crossing still is will have to look into it  .also found this info
Before 1870 there was only about 30 catholics in redcar ,1874 services held in a small church on lord st in 1877 moved to thrush rd called sacred heart now a methodist church ,so my guess is jane is buried in the redcar lane cemetery .also it may be a coincidence but the man living in railway cottage in coatham (now redcar) was called samuel thompson from yeaden yorkshire dont know if there is any connection .

jane would love to go grave hunting with you  ;D

Hi Cath,

Your explanation re: the cottage makes a lot of sense to me. Please do see if the cottage still stand there or not.

I shall have to search my files containing her death cert and her husband's second marriage in Redcar.

I cannot say for certain regarding the cemeteries but you possibly could be right. The only reason I say this is because I know George is not a Catholic but somehow he did marry Jane who is a Catholic (I think because this is not clear to me how they manage to marry in the Catholic Church when I know Jane's parents were not and she was baptised in the Church of England if I recalled correctly. Have her baptism entry).

Kind regards,

Tees

PS I would appreciate the picture of the railway crossing. Do not know if they are the originals from 1870s. :) It would be a nice touch to the whole picture as my great great grandfather was a gatekeeper.

PPS I do not know if this Samuel Thompson is related to my George. Perhaps he is his uncle or cousin. As I do not have any Samuel in my family tree.

just get the info as soon as you can dont mind searching the graves without any more info its more exciting when you find something, we know her name and when she died if she had a headstone wont be to difficult the railway crossing is now electronic ones but can still take a photo and i also know someone who may have some old photo's of the area will have a look over the weekend .the graveyard is only down the road from the cottage so we could take a photo of that then go to the cemetery.

jane afternoons are better for me but have to be back before 3 to pick daughter up from school tues, wed, thur are best for me

Hi Cath and Jane!

Nothing new information from Jane Thompson's death certificate--same as stated above.

George Thompson's second marriage showed that he got married in St Peter's Church and address is simply noted as Redcar. It is clearly an Established Church (Church of England). He remained a gatekeeper.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Cath & Jane,

Glad it is within a walking distance from my couple's house.

Meanwhile, I got the reply from Ian.

He found a plot but it is not my Jane Thompson--here's what he said: We have a Jane Thompson aged 56, years interred in Redcar Cemetery, Date of interment is 20/8/1879.

She lived at the Esplanade in Redcar.

If this is not the right person she may be buried in Coatham Church Yard but i don't hold the records for this, maybe she is in St, Peters Church yard Redcar.

Your Information is correct with your Dates and place.

Well, Cath and Jane, can you make a tail or a head out of this information?  ;D

Looking forward to your findings on my couple.

Regards,

Tees

Hi Cath!

It is possible that my Jane Thompson was taken back to her hometown which is Yarm, Yorkshire.

If someone has an access to the BVIR (I think I got this right) CD, s/he would say yes or no.

I do not know if her husband was a type who willingly part with money on this kind of expense(s).  For he did not keep the children from this marriage, when he married for the second time. These children ended up with my Jane's parents (their grandparents) in Yarm.

Kind regards,

Tees

i checked the burial for st peter's and christ church and she isn't in either so my guess is she went back to yarm so looks like your not going to find her just yet  :(,perhaps her family paid the expense to return her home

jane doesn't look like we will be grave hunting on tuesday now  :(

Oh what a day I am having, been to a football tournament with my son, been snapping away happily with the camera, until whoops, a kid from another team kicked the ball it bounced off me face (ouch) and broke my camera  :'( can you believe that :(  I am gutted as this camera was a present I bought myself with a long service award from my last employer.

And, now no graves to be looked for - gutted I am, mind you when I get a replacement camera, maybe we could have a trip up to Yarm, I can drive it's no problem.

Hi Jane & Cath,

Jane--I feel so bad for you that you got hurt in the process of taking pictures of your boy and only to have your newly obtained camera broken. Like Cath said, I hope you did not get a black eye!

Here's a bit good news! Like Cath guessed correctly, indeed, she was brought back to Yarm to be buried. Have details but do not know if we need a plot number, etc. Strangely, she was not in the same cemetery as her parents.

If both of you are set on going up to Yarm, do let me know as I have few burials in there.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Jane & Cath,

Jane, quite pleased to hear that your face is fine. Once again, I am terribly sorry about the camera.

I shall pm both of you with the details later on as I have to look for my burial list somewhere. :)

When you are able, take photo or two of the Railway Gate Cottage and the crossing.

Do have a good weekend! Appreciate your kind offer.

HI
JUST A THOUGHT. IF YOU KNOW THE DATE THEY DIED OR THE YEAR. YOU CAN GET THE CEMETRY DETAILS FROM MIDDLESBROUGH REGISTRY OFFICES JUST ASK FOR BURRIALS AND GIVE THEM THE DATES YOU HAVE FOR HER. I KNOW YOU CAN DO THIS. AS I HAVE FOR A FEW OF MY ANCESTORES IN STOCKTON. AND SOMETIMES THEY TELL YOU IF THEY HAVE A HEADSTONE. AND ALSO GIVE YOU THE PLOT NUMBER. ALSO MY ANCESTORS LIVED IN THE COTTAGES. THERES WAS 3 RAILWAY COTTAGES. IF I CAN HELP IN ANYWAY. JUST ASK .BYE FOR NOW :)

The cottages mentioned are two cottages together I believe, one of which was rebuilt recently (the one closest to the railway line).

I remember watching it being built and thinking how good it was that someone had taken the effort to rebuild it as it had been originally intended.

You're right crispyrice, the one nearest to the railway line was restored to its former glory. I think you'll find it was quite a few years ago now though, time flies!
If I'm not much mistaken, the plaque says it was built in 1828. Can't look too closely as I've been driving when I've seen it and don't want to end up in their front wall! Will have a good look if I'm at the front when the crossing closes  ;)
