I have been researching my family history for the past few years and have always believed that my great great grandfather was from Cork. However, I have just found out by checking the 1851 census that the family were from Carrickmacross in Monaghan.
Rose McMahon and her 3 sons Hugh born in 1830, Patrick born in 1833 and Anthony in 1837 left Ireland for England as a result of the potato famine in the late 1840's. I believe that at some stage Hugh and Anthony may have returned to the Carrickmacross area. If anyone has any knowledge of this family could you please let me know.
Thanks

I have a 3xgreat grandmother from Monaghan, possibly Maghercloone, whose name is Mary McMahon. She was born abt 1805 and married Peter McDermott, also of Monaghan, abt 1830. They had five children and emigrated to USA first to Ohio, then to Minnesota abt 1850. I will keep my eye out for other McMahons who followed the same route. I have only recently started my Ireland research, having just determined the county of orgin.
Thanks,
Patty

I've just come across your post as i too have some McMahon/Monaghan connections
My great-great grandfather was Edward mcMahon, married to Mary nee Dooley.
They variously appear at Drumboat, Inniskeen and Clones ( where Edward died).
One of their children was James , my great grandfather, who moved to Belfast and became a hairdresser as did ihis son James who was born in 1890.
I've been saddened to read of the loss and grief so many experienced with the deaths of young wives and children
I know your post was a long time ago but maybe you still come to this page.
