Title: Ancestry Bloopers!
Post by: joboy on Monday 07 November 05 09:45 GMT (UK)
If you are looking for a surname that starts with 'T' then substitute 'F' instead.
There are oodles of FHORNS and FHORPS and FHOMLINSONS out there.
Just take a look ............. I found many of mine that I could not find elsewhere.
I suppose the reverse would apply if you were looking for names like FINCH or FOSTER  ........... they might show up as TINCH and TOSTER.
Try it ........... good fun.

Another one to watch out for is 'Y' being transcribed as 'G'. I have had several instances of my Yardleys being listed as Gardleys.

Happy hunting!

Barlows often turn up as Barton's, Dare's as Dan's & Dane's but the best (or worst) i've seen was IRVING transcribed into JEOING.

Bit of a shocker that.

I have found GILBYs turing up as GIBBYs and GILLYs. The ultimate (for me) was the forename Araisbida (listed as a sibling of my g-g grandmother. I puzzled over that one for ages, then I realised it was her brother, Archibald.

I noticed that you are researching Socketts in Shropshire, I am doing research in that area as well but also for a Reverend Dr. David Francis who married an Eliza or Elizabeth Sockett around 1799 in Stafford. David's granddaughter was Harriet Annie Wilkins who was a poet and music teacher in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. If you have any information on David or Harriet I would greatly appreciate it as Harriet was my great-great-great grandmother's sister.

My GGG Grandfather Thomas P Nugent was transcribed on the 1881 census as Florence Niegeech....took me years to find him!

I actually stumbled across him by chance whilst browsing through the 1881 census images looking for someone else, 10 years after first trying to find him. I got my son who at the time was only 14 and has no interest in family history to read the image without telling him what it said.....he read it correctly straight away....hummmmm  ::)

They must have had experiences of codes in the war time. Have the transcribers worked at bletchley park?

I found James Fryman transcribed as James Seymour ! No wonder it took so long to find him  ???
If I find an error I always correct it but add a little note about how they could take more care when transcribing  :)

My Lincolnshire ancestors were all transported to Bovey Tracey in Devon.

When they got the county correct they got the place wrong, Pinchbeck comes up as Hendgebok, I ask you!
I think the people who regularly telephone saying we are paying too much council tax, there is a virus in my computer, we can have a grant for free loft insulation etc etc are moonlighting. They speak as ancestry spells.

Got a cold call the other day saying this firm were in the neighbourhood next week and it would be cheaper to have the barge boarding and fascias done at the same time as my neighbours. They had all agreed etc etc. I said they were very welcome to do the work if they could find barge boards and fascias as we had stone gulleys to take away rainwater . The caller slammmed the `phone down, I took exception to that as that is my prerogative!!!
