Hi all,
I'm back on the trail of the last bits of information I need about my Richard BALFOUR.
He and his family emigrated to Tasmania from Londonderry in 1832, aboard the "Norval", as part of a Chelsea Out-Pensioners emigration scheme (he was a Waterloo veteran).
In 1833 he advertised in a Launceston newspaper that he was setting up business as a cloth dyer/finisher...then we lose sight of him until 1838, when he and the family arrived in Sydney on board the "Parland" as free settlers, with the note that Richard had spent "5 yrs in VDL [assume Van Diemen's Land] then 2 yrs in London". The Parland sailed from Londonderry.
I have not seen the original of this passenger list, so I don't know if there is anything else written after "London". I have always assumed that the family got on the Parland in Tasmania as it passed by on its way to Sydney (assuming it did go via Tas). I couldn't imagine the family going all the way back to London, or Londonderry, and then coming out again pretty much straight away.
Is it possible that Richard went back home for some reason, then sailed out again, picked up the family in Tassie, and sailed on to Sydney?
I'm hoping someone has access to the shipping records and can help me find the following information:
1. When did Richard, plus or minus family, leave Tasmania prior to arriving in Sydney on the Parland?
2. Did he go back to Ireland, or to London?
3. Where did the Richard and family get on board the Parland?
Any help would be much appreciated.
From a very confused

Hi there Prue,
I'm not sure how much you already have about the ship and the voyage, but on the site below there are some things about it, the surgeon's report and a listing for 2 Balfours, one of whom named Richard.

Thanks Sue :)
Actually I had already seen that, it's very interesting isn't it? It's the only surgeon's report I've seen for any of "my" immigrant ships.
If anyone out there is able to tell me whether the "Parland" landed in Tasmania before NSW, and whether the Balfours boarded in Tasmania, I would be forever grateful!
Thank you

Hi Prue, I am sure this will help you. Sorry it is such a big list but I thought I may as well include it all.
Cheers

I am connected to the Lucas family listed (John, Ann and 2 youngsters plus two older daughters) so I have looked though the available documentation and have not found any mention of landing in Hobart. The migrants on the Parland were assisted immigrants so unlikely tha there were unassisted passengers but I have found that some of the ships chartered for assisted migrants did take paying passenges who are poorly or un- documented.
