Title: Cullen family history
Post by: Yetiman on Sunday 06 November 05 20:12 GMT (UK)
Have been trying to trace information about Richard Cullen born 1848 in Ireland, not sure where but may have come from Wicklow. Married Eliza Martin possibly 1866 came to England 1870c with a son Hugh born1869. Any info, (parents, location, church, brothers and sisters, etc., would be gratefully received.

Hello there. It is a cold night here (the wee small hours in the early morning actually) Your message has been here just over twelve months without a reply. I wonder where the Irish hospitality has gone. The Celtic Tiger probably ate it for lunch one day.  8)

Ach well, I hope you do not mind if an Ulsterman with Norwegian ancestors offers you a bit of help. I looked at http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php There are so many Cullens there it is hard to know where to begin. I wonder if the son might have been named after Richard's father. It would be easier to search for the less common Christian names attached to the surname.
I searched for both surnames in the same parish and obtained a very lengthy list indeed so signs are a difficult search lies ahead.  http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm

Hello yourself. Thanks for taking time to reply. I,ve been stuck with this one for some time and any snippet of info or advice is welcome and may just move me on that little bit further. It dosn't help though when I don't know where he originated from or where he lived. Still must keep trying. Thanks again.

Have you had a look at Genealogy.com genforum Cullen family http://genforum.genealogy.com/cullen and searched Ireland.
There are 406 postings.

Why do you think Richard Cullen came from Wicklow? Is it merely the Wicklow/Wexford localities show the highest numbers in the density of population of the Cullen family? Have you something more positive? Have you looked at the site below? It would probably help if you could give some indication where you have searched to date. There is no point going over old ground unless it contains something you have overlooked www.lrbcg.com/jtcullen/CullMisc.htm

Good Afternoon Yetiman,

It might be an idea researching Elizabeth's side of the family. The surname Martin was not as common as Cullen in Co. Wicklow. You could well find the search would be that much easier if you adopt this course of action.

Regards, Christopher

I am looking for Johanna Cullen born in Cork abt. 1831, married John Quinlan also born in Cork. They married possibly in Tipperary,  or possibly elsewhhere and then went to Woolwich, Kent, then on to Pembroke Dock, and had children both in Woolwich and in Pembroke Dock. I was given the name Cullen as a lead, and it could be incorrect. On the other hand there are other Cullens there in Pembroke Dock. I noticed a lot of Cullens went to Pennsylvania, as did the descendants of John and Johanna. Looking for any leads or tips on research. i'm not very familiar with Ireland research, and I realize these names are very common. :) I have looked at the IGI indexes, and do not see much there.

Correction:
Turns out the name is not Cullen at all. A relative has found all the information and we have names, dates, places, and even more cousins. ;D
