Would anyone tell me how to share a box of 265 victorian photos with everyone on this site.
some are named and dated all have photographers name and addresses on the back. They measure about 4x2.
I bought them at auction and they must be useful to someone.
Jakky

What a lovely thing to do & suggest jakky. I hope you manage to link some of them up with their families.
Thats a lovely picture you posted. Maybe someone may even be able to estimate the period and find them on the census, especially if have addresses as well as names.
Anglefish :)

Hi Jakky,
What a true find to have found the lovely photographs and their addesses.
What a nice thought to try and re-unite them with their modern day family.
Perhaps if you are able to list their names and addresses in someway people can pick up on this information.
Regards
Sarah :)

Jakky,
I;m so surprised that you have had few answers to this post, maybe because the first thought of anyone reading it was as mine very selfish.
But to put some serious thought into it, why not scan and post a few of them at frequent intervals - then my own thought would be to make up a suitable web album so that everyone can benefit. In the meantime (256 pics would take quite some time to scan and post at a few each week) it would give you time to think about what to do with your pics - they would probably be worth a sum of money to you, or you may wish to have the mounted in a proper album.

Hi Jakky,
Do you have any details on the back of that one - my sister in laws family name was Gibbs from Norfolk - not come across a Polly yet - but you never know.
I think there are lots of Gibbs around Hickling - I have found 19 and only just started on them!!
Cheers

-
Hi Jakky,
I hadn't replied yet because I was trying to think of what you could do with them! It's a lovely idea you've had, wanting to share this pictures with the community - I always feel sad when I see unclaimed photos, especially ones without names to them :'(
As denn has suggested it would be an idea to post a few at a time, and/or start a web album with them all on. Perhaps Trystan would agree to supply a webspace for this? ALternatively, or as well, or in the interim, perhaps those which have information on you could transcribe and post. People are more likely to recognise a name than a face, and could then ask for a scan.
Happy to join in further discussions about possibilities for this project!
Cheers

Maybe to go along with the photo's that may go in any album, Prue may be so kind as to write a paragraph or two on the history of photo' types and styles.
Denn
-
Sure, be happy to :D
-
Dear Jakky - I for one would really appreciate seeing all the photos you have on Rootschat. Over time of course. I have a great love of the Victorian photos - and who knows - one of my relatives may be in that wonderful cache. The one of Polly was lovely.
-
Dear All,
Thank you for your replies,
I maybe did not quite make myself clear enough,
I am so useless at anything to do with computers
that I would like to donate these to someone who could perhaps put them on a web album(never heard of it)!
So if anyone has the knowhow and they can put them on for Rootschat members they can have them,
Jakky
-
Jakky, I'd love them and would put them up on the web in a flash (and they'd make a nice study collection ;D ), but I'm in Australia :(
I'm sure there is a local Rootschatter who will jump at the chance, though!
Prue :)
-
Hi keith,
the address is I.W. Findlow & Nephew
92 Regent Street Leamington,
so maybe no use to you,
I will try to show you one of the backs they are super,
This has taken me about an houe so I hope it works,
Jakky ;D
-
Hi Prue,
Just what I wanted,
if you send me your address by a p.m. I will wrap them well and post them to you if you are sure you don't mind,
Jakky.
-
Jakky
I can't believe that I have missed this thread. What a wonderful thing for you to do :D
I am really looking forward to viewing the photos - after Prue has worked her magic.
I shall wait patiently..... ;)
Jan
-
Jakky, that's wonderful - have PMed you with my address. What a kind offer! :-*
Everyone else who's been following this thread - I promise to have the photos scanned and up on an album as soon as ever I can get them done. I would then be really really happy to be able to match up photos with their ancestors, via Rootschat, if anyone can make a connection.
;D
Prue
-
Hi,
That is that sorted then, and Sue and all who said what a kind thing it was...
I could never repay the help and kindness on Rootschat that I have received, if I can give a little back, then good, ;D
Jakky.
-
OOps,
sorry Jan I meant you, it's an age thing dear! ::)
Jakky
-
Gosh Prue, your going to be busy doing that! :o
I wonder, if you were planning on putting them on a web page, maybe some else could volunteer to get that ready for you so you don't have to do all the work? I'm sorry but this is not an offer, because I haven't got a clue myself how that would be done (or even if thats possible or if its better to do it a different way!).
I wish I could help more, its such a good idea.
Maybe in the future if rootschaters come across similar photos with names/address etc, they could also be uploaded on the site. Or would that be too much info :P
-
Hi Angelfish,
Thanks for the ideas. :) I don't mind doing the scanning etc, it would be a pleasure! Not sure how much someone else would be able to do re. a webpage/site though...I think I will just ask Rootschat for a separate webspace from my personal one, and get my Photoshop software to produce the actual pages. They won't be flash, but people will be able to scroll through and see all the pics as thumbnails, and then click on ones they are interested in to get an enlarged version.
It's the scanning that will take a long time, but if people are happy to wait, then I'm happy to do it.
Prue
-
Thrilled to bits to think that we are going to see photos through Rootschat. Thank you Jakky and thanks to you too Prue for all your time and patience. In happy anticipation..........
-
Well done Cuz
& I know you are the one for the job because of your passion and expertise in photographic stuff.............. can't wait to view them.
Jakky what an absolutely fantastic find and I know what you mean, I too am useless on computers and scanning stuff to the best resolution etc etc but the magic will be worked on her . With out any shadow of a doubt you will make lots of Root chatters very happy (inc me!) ;D

Hi there
May I make a suggestion that if you wish to create a web album, it would be worth having a look at "j album", a freeware album creator.
Here is an album that was made using "j album"
http://dennisford.rootschat.net/philippinealb/slides/2005-03-11indaysfilm6phils195.html
It is highly customisable, with the ability to change any feature of the album, comes with many ready made and customisable templates.
The particular album above can be scrolled through or used as a slideshow and could be burned to C.D. for distribution.
-
Excellent, thank you denn. I will have a look at that. It sounds more versatile than what Photoshop can produce.
Prue

and easy to use

OOps,
sorry Jan I meant you, it's an age thing dear! ::)
Jakky
;D ;D ;D ;D
I know exactly what you mean!!!!!
Jan
-
Hi Prue
Are you planning to scan in the backs as well ? Or will photos have any 'clues' as to names, areas?
Sorry, know it means twice as much work ;)
Helen
-
Hi Emmeline and all,
They have now been posted, they asked me what the worth was and I said priceless ;D
I hope they arrive safely in Oz.
Jakky
-
Hi all,
Initially I will scan fronts only, and transcribe any info. Then I thought by request I would scan the backs. I am hoping by putting them online that people will recognise a face or a name (if there is one) and can then ask me for more info, and if they're convinced that the photo is "one of theirs" then I'll post them the original photo for their collection.
If there are any interesting photographic types in there then I'll add them to another page as well, one that I'm planning on identifying different photo techniques. This can help with dating photos.
What do you think?
Prue
-
What do you think?
That you're going to have a lot of extremely well traveled photos on your hands! ;)
-
Did they put the word ' priceless ' on the declaration sticker Jakky? Hope so. Had not realised they were travelling thousands of miles before getting to we Rootschatters. However, from what I have read they will be in the best of hands. Thanks.
-
Thanks everyone.
I realise what a responsibility I've taken on, and assure you that I'm determined to share the pictures and hopefully some of the actual photos with Rootschatters, as Jakky wanted. My scanner will be working overtime to get all the imaging done ASAP! ;D
If you have any other ideas about how you'd like me to proceed, let me know.
Prue
-
Jakky and everyone,
Thought you'd like to know that the parcel of photographs arrived today!! I've spent the last couple of hours going through them and grouping them according to towns, photographers, families...there are a few family groups but the vast majority of photos have no ID at all :'(
I'll start scanning and uploading as soon as I can, and will let you know when there are some up on the web.
Thank you Jakky, for the wonderful opportunity to give these photos some life again, after all these years! I only hope some of them get claimed by rellies and can "go home" at last! :)
Prue
-
Thanks PrueM for the update..........appreciated.
Looking forward to some photographic delights.
-
P
I take it as usual we are not so lucky and there are non of ours in the batch???
So glad they arrrived safely though!
So look forward to seeing them on line soon

The link to the album set up is here:
http://victorian-photos.rootschat.net/
they appear to be from all over - any information on the photos as to who/where/etc is on a table on that site.
Helen ;)

Thanks for passing on the link Helen. I've been SO looking forward to checking the photos out!!
Ryan.
:)
-
I am not sure how well this will be received but I just bought another 200 or so from auction including 35 cabinet cards. ::)
There are different countries in this lot, USA. Holland .France. Egypt. India Bergen. Scotland one or two from Queensland etc.
Dare I ask if you want them Prue?
I could not resist them,
Jakky
-
Good on you Jakky for buying them, they could so easily end up in a dump some where.
Three Cheers to you.........and Prue ;D
Sharon
-
Jakky
What are you like ;D ;D ;D
I'd have done the same probably tho' :)
How can Prue say no... ;)
Helen
-
;D
Hi Jakky,
Do you even need to ask!! Of course I'll take them, if you're happy to spend the money on postage.
Anyway, I'd love to have them, shall give them a good home until they find their families again.
Prue
P.S. I hope to load another page of 50 pics up to the website tonight...stay tuned!
-
Thanks Prue,
you are a real star,
I shall wait 'till after Christmas, don't want them getting lost in the post,
Jakky.
-
Hi Prue,
Posted most of them today, what a carry on they were a bit over the weight and they wanted £50. So I said I would send them surface and they wanted your phone no. and you would have to pick them up.
In the end I took them home and removed about 50 or so and posted them air mail at less than £20. just goes to show, check your weights...
I will send the other few when I have the energy. You should receive this lot in about 7 days.
Hope they arrive allright,
Regards
Jakky
-
Hi Jakky,
What a carry-on! At least they are finally on their way (well, most of them!). Can't wait to get them!
:D
Prue
-
great photographs, however as I myself find it is very hard to identify photos from that era. unless you already have old photos, it is also hard due to the fact not all had names or information to identify them. well lets hope people may recognize them. great work....
-
Hi searchers
Just found the link to this collection of photographs - what a great idea to have them available for all.
My gt gt grandfather, Edward LANCASTER 1823-1883 was a studio photographer who had lived mainly in Chester but also worked at Birkenhead, Llandudno and other resorts. He bagan his work as a portrait artist and moved into the brand 'new' technique ca.1858.
His bother John LANCASTER 1826-1904 had emigrated to Sydney by 1870 and settled in Melbourne where he made his way as a photographer. The large family covered the many various duties when they worked in the business.
Edward Lancaster's daughter Ada was described in the census as photographist's assistant in her father's studio.
In 1874 she married Fredk HADLOW 1851-1923 also a photographer - they were my gt grandfather and gt grandmother.
I have seen a small collection of their cabinet and carte images but sadly do not have any in my personal archive.
Jean M Bennett
-
Wow Jean! How exciting - I wish I had a photographer in amongst my lot.
There aren't any Lancaster photos in the ones that are up on the site at present, but I still have a couple of hundred cartes that I haven't loaded yet - including some that are still on their way from the lovely generous Jakky! You never know, as I go through those I might find a Lancaster or two and if I do, they're yours.
Cheers
Prue
-
Hi Prue
Good to hear from you. Before taking on the family history as a hobby I had very little information on the LANCASTER's. So much was new. Much of the story came by digging in archives. But significant leads were from those with more experience and happy to share.
The little facts were gradually pieced together to make the big picture.
Jean

I have just come across this thread and am now about to look at the photographs scanned in by Prue. I inherited a box of photos from my grandmother and although some have a message on the back like "Love from Billy" I have no idea who most of them are either. Can I add any photos to the site Prue has done or should I start a separate one ??? Mine are all around the York, Leeds areas.
-
Hi goose, hope you enjoy the photos :)
I am finding it difficult to get enough time to add to the site this year, but still have a hundred or more photos to scan and put up. I also have some images donated by another Rootschatter that I have to load on to the site, and would be happy to put yours up too if you like...how many do you have? I can PM you with details of what size/resolution to scan them at, if you want. It would be lovely to add as many pics as possible to the site.
I think I'm going to have to re-organise it, perhaps like Roger Vaughan's site (http://www.rogerco.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm) I will have it alphabetical by photographer's name, and perhaps indexed by any surnames that are known for the sitters...
Would be happy to have others' thoughts on this please. Might give me the shove I need to get the site going again!!
Prue
-
Hi Prue, and thanks for the offer, I can scan photos in though so no problem there, it would be finding how to put them onto a site so I suppose that is where you come in ;D
I think I have about 50 photos maybe less, I would have to count them and put them into groups (weddings, families etc.,).
I just looked at Roger Vaughan's site, and wow and wow again he has put in a lot of work on that one hasn't. Let me know what you want me to do and I will scan the photos into the size etc you suggest.
Thanks, Carol

Hi Everyone
i have never been on the Unwanted Items before,i was just passing so thought to have a look.I have been reading through all the post from the first. What i have been reading is amazing.Jakky buys something she isn't really interested, for the benefit of others what a wonderful person she is. Then she buys even more, and pays all that postage not many people would do that,if any :-\
Prue i wish i could have been in your house when the postman came ;D
Celia

Jakky RE you P.M Glad i put a smile on your face ;D
Celia

Prue,
I'm intriqued by your Harris album. I have a small bunch of Harris cousins of Kent, and a somewhat larger bunch of Harris in Surrey. I have brothers Edward and Theodore, but don't have photos of them, don't know what they looked like, and they were born in....Finsbury and Stoke Newington, respectively...pity there aren't more names. I have some xeroxes of earlier photos of the family, and xeroxes of much earlier likenesses of the family (paintings) but I can't see if there's a relationship. maybe this is one of the "lost" branches, though I can't say for sure. pity there's so little info. many of my Harris's were Quaker, many left the faith in the Victorian era...much harder to trace that way...
Cornelia
-
Hi Cornelia :)
What a pity you can't be more sure...maybe the evidence will come to light in the future, you never know. It would be lovely to be able to make the link. I wish there was more info with the photos but I guess we're lucky to even have what we do...so many of them have nothing written on them :(
Maybe the address in the front of the album would be the thing to trace...I have tried to find the lady who owned the album, using the census, but have had no luck (yet!)
Prue
-
hi, Prue,
yes, it is a pity. sometimes the research is that way, too. I'll find a branch I'm sure fits in somewhere, and it can take years to prove it-so close....but...
I'm intrigued by others, as well.
I have Bassetts of Leighton Buzzard and not you have Bassetts in the cart de visite's...but yours are of Wolverhampton. I have heard of this place, but it isn't among my peoples home villages towns or cities. and none of mine were photographers.
although I'm a "heinz" and have Dutch ancestry among others, I saw no other names or places that connected.
I do appreciate having the opportunity to look at the photos. it's a wonderful thing you do.
one question, I have a scanner that I can't figure how to reduce the scans on. they come out monster size. I haven't used it in a while, but if I send a scan I'm told the picture is too big. the program is too simplistic, and without directions-so there aren't alot of choices that I can find. other than buying a new scanner (not an option right now) what do I do? it's an hp scanjet 4600, if that helps-I'm like Jakki-have my own batch of photos I've picked up here and there I want to post to deadfred's and I can't unless I can get the beast to co-operate...
-
Hi again Cornelia :)
Well if you ever find a connection to any of the pics, they will be kept safely here so you may claim them any time.
Now, about the scanner...mine is fairly old (an Agfa SnapScan 1212u) but in the software window when I do the preview scan, I can choose different settings for the output. For the victorian photo website, I've been choosing 200dpi for the scanning resolution, and jpeg for the file type. Normally I get it to scan directly into Photoshop, so I can check the image before saving it.
I found the following document on the web, not sure if it will help you or if you already have it...
http://click.ucdavis.edu/equipment/manuals/HP4600Scanner.pdf
Let me know how it goes :)

Hi all,
Like Celia before me , it's also my first peep into this part of RootsChat, and I think it goes to prove what a lovely bunch of "Chatters we have on the site.
I can't wait to have a look at the picture show, i just know it will be amazing!
I send my sincere thank's to all who have taken part in the "operation"
Regards Dolly.
-
ive escaped from the armed forces site, never been on here before.
JAKKY your a very nice girl for donating the photos, mack
-
Hi Mack,
very nice of you to say so, but... I only donated the photos... Prue did all the work, (and is still at it) :o and Rootschat gave the web space, and other people are now contributing.
There are so many nice people on this site that have been of enormous help ( and sometimes great comfort)
certainly to me and I know to other people.
Lots of them do not even get a mention for the great work they do, often by p.messages.
Isn't it a lovely site to belong to?
Jakky
-
Hi Jakky, Mack and all... :)
It's a hard slog, but an absolute pleasure and a privelege to be able to contribute something. I wish I could work faster to get all the photos up online - if only I didn't have to work for a living!! ;D
I agree Jakky - Rootschat and Rootschatters are just great! :D
Prue
-
Hi, we think alike. I have a large archive of Victorian cdv etc and I seem to spend most of my time logging photographer details (over 10,000) as well as details of the sitters (over 4000 at present) for family history research. see www.victorianIMAGEcollection.com The website is good but I am currently working on another more user friendly version for everyone to search.
I would be happy to add the cdvs to my archive and would be happy to come to some arrangement. Regards Ron Cosens
-
Hi,
First off, WOW, what a project! The photos are wonderful, and it is so nice to see them being saved by someone that had no personal interest in them. Thank you Jakky!!
Prue you have done a great job with the site, and to donate your time is so wonderful!
Have all the photos been added now? I have had an awesome time looking through all these photos, I love looking at old photos, I hope to come across a shoebox full at a sale on day :D
Cheers
Liz
-
Hi Liz,
Thanks for your kind words :)
Yes, all the photos are added now, I haven't update the front page to note that yet (how slack is that! :-[ )
I should also start adding in notes to say whether a photo has been claimed or adopted. I recently sent a whole lot over to a museum in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands, which were taken there back in the early 1900s.
Prue
-
hi fantastic collection dont think any of my relatives are in there :'( :'( i love black and white photos one of the walls in my front room is covered in them :) :) david

Glad you like the site David :)
Prue

Wow, what a wonderful topic this is. I have spent most of the afternoon reading all topic replies and looking at the links that have been put on the topic. I'm now a bit goggled eyed ::) as I have looked at to many Victorian photographs. Well done Prue, you have done a wonderful job, and you deserve a pat on the back. You too Jakky, what a great topic you started.
I'm really glad I had a bit of spare time on my hands today, as I have been well educated on Victorian photographs
Dave

Have spent most of the evening looking at the various posts and then the lovely photographs. What a great thing to do - well done to all involved. ;D
Sadly don't think any of my rellies are on there!
FEK33
-
Hi Fek,
Never mind, you can do what I have, and adopt one,
I have chosen U.K.Photographers M-S. she is 6th row down Maryland004.
Any woman with the front to wear that outfit has to be reckoned with, my type of girl, or at least the one I would like as part of my past,
Jakky
-
Good idea Jakky - I've had a couple of people "adopt" their favourite photos and have sent them the originals. They were pictures with no names attached and almost nil chance of being reunited with their own families. I would rather have them loved and admired by an adoptive parent than sit in the box with all the other nameless faces :-\
I even reunited a whole set of photos from Vlaardingen in the Netherlands with their home town - the local museum saw them on the website and asked for scans of them...I offered them the real things and they were over the moon :) I'm happy they're going home. Maybe someone there will recognise them :)
Prue
-
This is the first time I have looked at this thread and what a smashing one it is. Congratulations Prue and Thankyou Jakky. No -one I recognise on there but I really enjoyed looking at them.
-
How generous of Jakky and Prue to give us a wonderful opportunity of maybe finding a pic of one of our ancestors. Thankyou and well done both of you.
Prue if you come across any Walls of Hereford/Worcester or Browns of Shropshire.....

I must have a look again at these wonderful photos... I would love to adopt one or two. Last time I looked I remember seeing some that I thought were so fabulous & I would love to give them a good home :)
Cuz xx

I would love to adopt one - but sadly I have a few of my own with no names, etc!!
I won't let them beat me though - I will find out who they are! They must belong to me somewhere. Argghh!
FEK33 :D
-
Hello Jakky - Just wanted to tell you that I had taken a peek at your Maryland 004.
Well, more like a marquee than an outfit. I'm hoping to find one I can ' adopt ' but she would be very hard to beat.
Belated thanks to you and to Prue for all the delightful moments you have given us through your photo treasures......
-
Hi Pru
Firstly what a fab album and secondly I think the Kirks you have just might be part of my family. Do you have any christian names for them please.
Best wishes
Jo
-
Hi Jo :)
The Kirks that you mentioned are not the names of the sitters, but the name of the photographer - Samuel Kirk. Is he one of yours?
Cheers
Prue

Hello Pru
No sorry hes not mine. I can only manage ag labs and workers in the textile industry. Although one of my Kirks managed to become a Hairdresser/Grocer.
Never mind, I think it was wishful thinking on my part.
Best wishes

Hi Pru,
Great photos, I am interested in the photographer HILLS. I am a member of the Hills family from Cambridge and I believe that one of the ancestors was indeed a photographer. Any further information would be wonderful.
Thanx Lynn H.
-
You are all truly amazing!! I've only been here a few days and yet the effort and dedication that everybody puts in is just overwhelming. The pictures are wonderful and having scanned the odd one or two of my own for my family I really can apreciate the time that you put in to share them.
On behalf of everyone new that wanders through your portals.. Thank you for making such a marvelous effort.

Hi Lynn,
I don't have any further information about Hills & Saunders myself, but they are still in operation and have a website which gives a bit of a potted history:
http://www.hillsandsaunders.co.uk/
Hope that helps!

Hi Prue
Just found this topic. You and Jakky have done a really great job give yourself a pat on the back. I read all the post with great excitement and could not what to see the photos. I have always loved old photos even as a very small child I could sit for hours looking at them, but the link is still down how disappointed I was. :'( :'( :'(
Prue is there any Sutherland, Melrose, Mein or Hyslop from Scotland that I could give a very good home to.
Regards Janice

Hi Janice :)
You're in luck! The site has a new home - see this thread:

What a lovely and generous idea, jakky. For Keith Bateman: Polly could be a nickname for Mary. My grandmother was baptised Mary, but was known as Polly - which has really confused one family researcher and I cannot contact him to put him straight.

Oh Darn I just found this thread and was all excited and oh botheration I can't see the photos lol
