Title: Wileman Measham, Derbys (Leics)1819
Post by: carol59 on Saturday 28 August 04 13:20 BST (UK)
I am looking for the parents of Richard Wileman whose birth/baptism was in 1819 at Measham.  I have arranged to travel from berkshire to derbyshire on 7 sep but have found that the Derbys record office do not cover 1819 for measham as it is in the leics office.  wd be very grateful for any help.

Hi Carol59,

                 Yes Measham is in Leicestershire.
I have looked on the IGI and Richard Wileman was christened in Measham on 11 April 1819. His parents were William and Susanna Wileman.

I then looked for the marriage and William Wileman wed on 25 December 1815 at Measham but to Mary Wright which suggests that he married twice and Mary probably died soon after the marriage, possibly in childbirth, a fairly regular occurrance in those days. There is no record on the IGI of a wedding to Susanna.
                       Regards, Al.

Hi again Carol59,

Further to my first message Richard's father William Wileman was christened at Measham on 23 March 1788 to John and Sarah. It looks as though Measham was a veritable den of Wilemans as was Earl Shilton where a Richard Wileman wed Susanna Taylor on 18 February 1812? Most of the Measham Wilemans appear to have been miners with the odd boatman thrown in.

Carol59,

Apologies, it was William Wileman who married Susanna Taylor at Earl Shilton in 1812. Could these have been the parents of your Richard although other children of theirs were christened in Earl Shilton

Thanks Al for your information, I have checked out the children of William and Susannah and there is a son Richard born in 1819 but he appears to have died as a child so i am not sure whether the Earl Shilton Susannah is the right one.
I am sure that William is Richards father as  i have richards marriage cert, its finding his mother that seems to be a problem particularly as there were a few William Wilemans around.  Perhaps his mother is a different Susannah.
If you have any brainwaves on this, please let me know. thanks for your efforts so far.

Hi Carol59,

I still think Susanna was the second wife of William but a good trawl through the Measham Registers would I think solve your problem. The IGI leaves out more than it shows, it is really useful but the true picture can only be found in the actual registers. I am sure the Earl Shilton branch had some connection to the Measham one as many of the children in both cases were very similar and usually a pattern emerges in related families.
                             Good luck in your research,

                                                                       Al

many thanks Al and Wendy for your help with this one, your info is helping me build up a picture that hopefully i can work on and come up with some positive results.

Wendy, thank you for taking the time and trouble to get the information on richard and susannah for me, im sure it will all prove very helpful.
i think that the William you picked up on the 1851 leics census wd be too young to have been richards father but he may well be a relative.

Al, i think you are right i will have to take a good look at the measham parish registers, i will have to make another trip northwards and visit the leicester record office at some point and see what i can come up with.

many thanks again for your help.

Just found your post ref: Richard Wileman.
Although I don't have any information on him for you, I do have a Mary Jane Wileman in my tree born 1853 d/o Richard & Mary at Measham who married Joseph Wright.

I do however plan a visit to Leics record office in the new year if you have not already got the information you need I would be willing to look for you then.

Mary

Hi Debbie, thanks very much for the info, i had come across them before and im fairly sure that Wm and Susannah are my direct ancestors (grandparents x 4), have looked on the original 1841 census and it reads 60yrs of age on there which helps to confirm it.  Think in 1851 that the old William with Benjamin and Elizabeth is the same William as the one in 1841  as Susannah died in 1848 and think Elizabeth is his daughter tho i notice Williams occupation appears to have changed.  i know for sure that my william was a weaver at some point.  if you have any connections with these families please let me know.  best wishes carol
