I have several children linked to Joseph BELFIELD b. abt 1814 Longnor but their birth certificates give different mothers- bith Mary (one is MARY FOX and the other MARY BRADBURY). In the 1851 census Mary is shown born Fawfieldhead abt 1822.
On 1861 Mary is shown b. Longnor abt.1821
1871 Mary's place of birth is Heathylee b. abt 1821
1881 Mary's place of birth is Fawfieldhead 1822
I'd be very interested to know what the Parish Registers show for the marriage of Joseph Belfield around 1840. First son, Thomas b. LONGNOR ABT 1840-1

Which children have which mother? I can look the marriage up for you tomorrow as I am vsiiting the Archives but if I find one for Joseph Belfield and Mary FOX, what is there to say that Mary FOX didn't die and Joseph remarried a Mary BELFIELD?
At least if I know what children were born when and with which mother, I can look for a second marriage.

Thanks for your reply, Sam from Stoke. I should have made this clearer.
I have a marriage certificate for Joseph Belfield, Baker marrying Mary Bradbury, in Nov 1839 at Prestbury Parish Church, Macclesfield. Both are described as 'of full age' and both were living in Macclesfield at the time of their marriage.
I have linked the following children to Joseph and Mary via 1851-1901 censuses & other factors but the mystery is the different names of the mother.
See below:
Ann Belfield b. 31/8/1840 Longnor (father: Joseph Belfield, baker, Mother:Mary Bradbury) source birth cert. In 1868 Ann had an illegitimate son Isaac Belfield who is with grandparents Joseph age 67, baker and Mary 59 in 1871 and 1881 census Longnor.
Thomas Belfield b. abt 1841 Longnor
1851 census age 9 living with parents Joseph and Mary
Joseph Belfield b. abt 1845 Longnor
1851 census age 6 with parents Joseph and Mary
Sarah Belfield b. 17 April 1847 Longnor Father; Joseph Belfield, labourer mother Mary Fox
Sarah has illegitimate son Frederick b. 1869 who is living with grandparents Joseph and Mary in 1881 census
James Belfield b. 18/5/1850 Longnor Father: Joseph and Mother: Mary Fox
1851 census aged 8 months with parents, Joseph and Mary, sister Sarah age 3, Joseph age 6 and Thomas age 9
Mary Belfield b. abt 1853 Longnor
Age 8 in 1861 census with parents Joseph and Mary in Longnor plus James (10) Joseph (16) Thomas (19)
Martha Belfield b. 16 Feb 1854 Longnor Father: Joseph Belfield aND mother: Mary Bradbury
1861 census see above Martha age 7 with siblings, Mary, James, Joseph adn Thomas
Martha had illegitimate son, Benjamin Belfield b. 1876 who is with grandparents age 5 in 1881 census Longnor.
Dolly Belfield b, 25.6.1856 Longnor Father: Joseph Belfield Mother; Mary Bradbury
1861 census Dolly age 4 with parents & siblings Martha age 7, Mary age 8, James age 10, Joseph (16) and Thomas (19)
Charlotte Belfield b. 25.6.1856 Longnor
Father Joseph Belfield, baker, Mother Mary Fox
1861 census age 2 with siblings as above
John Belfield b. abt 1862
John age 9 in 1871 census with parents Joseph and Mary and siblings Charlotte (13) Martha (17)
If you can help me sort this lot out, I'll be eternally grateful.
Many thanks and kind regards

Hi Meg
There were 2 churches in Longnor, I looked through one and could see no Belfields at all. I ran out of time and wasn't able to check the other but I am going again next week so will check the other church then.

I think it's likely to be St Bartholomew's- just a hunch!
Thanks so much for your help

Another thing- I have Joseph's (father) death certificate- he died in 1898 at Monyash aged 84 which gives his date of birth at about 1814-5.
In 1891 census he was living with unmarried daughter Ann Belfield in Monyash.

Hello Sam from Stoke
Did you ever get back to the Record Office?
Still finding all this intriguing!

Hello Meg
We've just been reading your 05 requests re Belfield information.
We are probably related as we also have Belfield connections in Longnor.
Have you the 'All Belfield Births registered in longnor district from 1837-1935'?
We do.
After all the time since your request - have you solved the mystery of the 2 Marys?
We also have list of Longnor burials from 1817-1858.
Records from St Barts church Longnor were forwarded to Anglican Cathedral archives Chester UK.(to our knowledge).
Some of our Belfield forbears are buried in St Barts Longnor.
