There are loads of Whiteheads born and living in Newton in 1851.
Do you have marriage cert of William and Nanny to show her father?

Thank you so much Tricia.
Should I look for the records under Rowbottom. I do know that my grandmother spelled it Rowbotham and the her sister spelled it Rowbottham. I was under the impression that some of the census spelled it Rowbottom. I live in the United States and am looking to find out as much as I can before going next August to Cheshire.
I am going to send for marriage certificate for William and Nanny.
Is Hallbottom,Mottram in Longdendale near Newton,Hyde?
-
Yes, if you look at the reference at the bottom of the searches the place name after the first number is the registration district.
i.e. Ashton under Lyne, Newton is the registration district for those living in Hallbottom, Mottram in Longdendale
I would think there is a good chance that your family will appear under these variations of spellings either because of mistakes or choice.
Good Luck, Tricia

Thank you Tricia. You have given me a lot of information and confirmed what I guessed at. James is Joseph's son. I now have other areas to look in. Thanks again.
I will put out a new topic for the 1841 census information. and count this as completed.

Hi
Just to say that we are descended from John Rowbottom born 1817 who had a shop on Back Lane, Newton, Hyde.
Just to say that all the family on this side of the Atlantic have always spelt the surname as Rowbottom.
Cheers Lyn

Hi Lyn, nice to hear from you. John born 1817 who were his parents? The area you listed is mentioned in some of the information I have. I don't have any John's. I hope we have a connection. Dianne
