I'm hoping some kind person has access to the 1841 of Bristol.
Here they are in 1851, Bristol, St Paul
Emma Nelmes, abt 1807, born Thornbury, Glos, Widower
Thomas Nelmes, abt 1833, Bristol, son
Emma Nelmes, abt 1835, Bristol, daughter
Joseph Nelmes, abt 1837, Bristol, son
I'm hoping husband Nelmes is with them in 1841!
Many Thanks, much appreciated,
Helen x

YOu're welcome; it's not a waste of time, just disappointing.
Perhaps someone else will have better eyes than I. I'm going to double check, as it does seem strange, although stranger things have happened...
Perhaps they were living in a county which is not yet covered by Origins.

Hi Loo,
Oh I really appreciate your time on this. I'm baffled as to where they could be. As Joseph was born in Bristol in 1837, I suppose I just assumed they'd be there in 1841.
I supppose they could be visiting rellies in another county or something.......
Hopefully I'll find out one day!
Thanks again

Update and still searching!
I've since discovered Thomas Nelmes married Emma Baylis in 1827. I believe Thomas died in 1840. They had baby Mary in Oct 1840 (confirms mmn on the gro index.) So I've been searching for Mary and family on the 1841 census again but to no avail. Mary died in 1842.
Thomas died in Mar 1840 but Mary's baptism doesn't mention he's deceased? Can this happen? He died in the Poorhouse at Thornbury. I wonder if the family could be in the same place in 1841? Does anyone have any tips on how to find the workhouse on the census of 1841? I'd appreciate any advice etc.
Best Regards

Have you considered obtaining Mary's birth certificate and/or death certificate to see what address is given? On Find My Past you can do an address search for all the census records plus the 1939 Register.
NELMES, MARY BAYLIS

Hi Girl Guide,
Thanks for your suggestion, I'll do that.

I've purchased the birth cert and the place of birth was Water St, Bristol. I then realised I already had that address from the baptism in Nov 1840.....
At least the birth cert confirms father Thomas as deceased (as the baptism record didn't)
I've trawled through the 1841 for Water St but the family aren't there.

I had a look for them too but no luck :(

Aww thanks for looking Millie :)

Long shot but were her parents still alive (Baylis) do you know?
Just in case she went home to them after being widowed.
-
I've thought that too. Unfortunately I don't know who Emma's parents were.
Thanks again for your interest

Thornbury Union Workhouse in 1841 is H0 107/ 368 Book 5 Folio 39 page 1
John Thompson is the Governor age 50 Born S (Scotland)
Mart Thompson is the Matron age 50 Not born in County
ADDED
The writing is clear and fortunately 'occupants' are listed by name and not initials as often happens

Thanks very much for that Rosie. My Nelmes' aren't there, which I suppose I should be grateful for.
Thanks again, Helen x
