My GG Grandparents were from the Alfreton area. His name was Thomas Slater and his wife's name was Mary but I don't know her surname. I found several Thomas Slaters in Derbyshire but I think the one who married Mary Tagg in Alfreton on either 25.12.1830 or 18.1 1831 may be the correct one. Is anyone able to look this up and see if it gives anymore details. I think my GG Grandmother's father was William. The Slaters had three sons born in Derbyshire before they moved to Yorkshire. They were William, born 1832, Alfreton, John, born 1834, Somercotes and Levi, born 1836, Redding. I would be grateful for any information about them if possible

I looked on my Phillimore Marriage records and the only marriage in Alfreton is the one between Thomas and Mary Tagg - it gives no more information I'm afraid.

Thanks Sue
I got the information re the Slater/Tagg marriage from the LDS website but it was one of those entries that had been submitted by a member of the church so may not have been accurate. At least, thanks to you, I now know the wedding did take place.

Hi Sylvia
Many thanks for these messages. I like the William Slater marriage @ Pinxton. Thomas and Mary's eldest son was a William so if he'd been named in the traditional way Thomas's father would also have been William and this marriage is about the right timeframe and not too far away. Their third son was Levi which I thought was quite uncommon but there seems to be number of Levi Slaters in Derbyshire so perhaps it's a family name and they are all related. (Incidently Levi had a son named Lazarus who unfortunately failed to emulate his namesake and died aged 23yrs).
I've just received a copy of my G Grandfather's 2nd marriage certificate which I've been searching for for ages. I only knew her Christian names and because the GRO ref no. was difficult to read they'd been shown seperately under different ref no.'s on freeBMD. Now all I need is to find out what happened to his third wife! She was living with him when the 1901 census was taken but that's the last trace I have of her. I've posted another message on the W Yorkshire board but have had no replies so I'm resigned to waiting till 2011 to see if she's in the 1911 census.
I like the bus map which is coming in very handy
Thanks again

Hi Sylvia
Thanks for this.
The Thomas Slater/Mary Goodwin marriage was my second choice until I got Mary's 2nd marriage certificate which gave her father's name as William Tyke. I could believe that Tagg could sound like Tyke but not Goodwin! Now you say this Thomas was a farmer, I'm even more convinced he wasn't my GG Grandfather - he was a miner.

Hi Sylvia
Thanks for the photo. She does look a bit familiar and I've been trying to think why. I think it's the cheeks - most of the Slater men had high cheek bones and when they were younger and leaner looked slightly Slavic - a bit like Jack Palance if you remember him. I suppose the women had them too but they were more rounded - like Janet.
I'm just on my way to do some Christmas shopping ugh! - not my favourite pastime - but when I get back I'll see if I can find a photo to show you what I mean. The nearest match would be Audrey my 2nd cousin but I've only got a photocopy of a tattered newspaper photo of her which won't be clear enough. I've never been very good at scanning so keep your fingers crossed - it may take a while!
Thanks again

For anyone interested in the name Levi the one mentioned later in the post as Levi Slater 1928 was my great grandfather. Born 22/4/1852 at Ilkeston and died 13/3/1928 at Risley and buried inthe churchyard there. His wife was Sarah Barber born 1853 at Spondon and died 20/5/1933 at Elvaston. She is also buried in Risley.
Levi's father was also a Levi born 8/3/1818 at West Hallam. He married Hannah Ward.
If anyone is connected with my family I will gladly forward more details.
