Title: 1851 Look up please - BELCH - Westbury?
Post by: Dave Male on Friday 28 October 05 18:10 BST (UK)
Good Evening  :)

I would be grateful for any information regarding the family which includes Thomas Belch  born c1842 - subsequent censuses show him to be in the Westbury  area, but this is not certain for 1851.

Kind Regards - Dave

Hi Joe (& Dave)

This had me going as well!

Unfortunately if you check the Richard & Maria family in 1861 then Thomas is still living with them. The Thomas that Dave is looking for, is a servant on Hurst Farm in Westbury at the time of the 1861 census (assuming I’ve got the one he’s referring too!).

Anyway, this is my best calculated guess (although his age is dodgy).

1851 Wales (don't you love places on the border)
Ref: HO107/1991/166 Page 15
Address: Crew Green, Township of Bauseley (a couple of miles north west of Alberbury – his birth place quoted in 1861)

Thomas Jones – Head – M – 31 – Maltster 1 man 1 boy – Montgomery, Guildsfield
Martha Jones – Wife – M – 29 – Montgomery, Lland?nio
La??sa Jones – Daur – 6 – Montgomery, Alberbury
Infant – Daur – 1month – Montgomery, Alberbury
Elizabeth Jones – Visitor – U – 28 – Montgomery, Guildsfield
Thomas Bel?h – Servt – U – 1? – Montgomery, Alberbury
Thomas Pryce – Servant – Widower – 61 – Malt Maker – Montgomery, Guildsfield

? in place of unreadable letters. I can’t honestly make the missing letter a ‘c’ in his surname. The second figure on his age may be 4, hence the age being a bit dodgy.

Anyway, it’s the best I can come up with. Good luck with the hunt.

John

Hi again

Got so fixed on Thomas that I forgot the family.

1851 Wales
Ref: HO107/1991/160 Page 2
Address: Caydway, Bauseley. (think it might be Coedway now – between Alberbury and Crew Green)

All surnames Bel?h (a ‘c’, who knows – looks more like an ‘s’ to me)

Richard – Head – M – 3? – Farm Labourer – Salop,
Margaret – Wife – M – 37 – Montgomery, Bau?ley
John – Son – 13
Mary – Daur – 7
Jane – Daur – 3
Sarah – Daur – 5 – Scholar
William – Son – 10m

The second figure for Richard may be 4. All the children share the same birth place as Margaret – guess it’s Bauseley but it’s squeezed in on the form. I confirm the ages, don’t know why they are out of order?

Ah – I can go to bed now.

All the best
John

Thanks Joe - Cheers

Hi again John
I saw the Bausely connection on the 1881 which says that Richard and Margaret were both born Bausley, Shropshire plus i didnt realise Shropshire is so close to Wales maybe thats what threw me

Hi Joe and John

Super effort by you both - many thanks indeed.

The surname of Belch, just about sums up my feelings for searching for this chap - and now he's been found in Wales with more stomach churning place names to consider. ;D

Very Grateful to you Both - Kind Regards - Dave
