Title: Sussex Marriage Lookup please
Post by: Alord on Wednesday 26 October 05 10:13 BST (UK)
Would it be possible to find out if there is a marriage on the Sussex Index between Ann Miller, possibly of Hailsham and ? Osborn?

This would  be after 1810 (when she she would be about 15).  Ann is definitely born Hailsham but of course need not be married there.

Thank you very much for your time.

Alison

Hi Alord

Sorry, have just checked for you - there is no Osborne or variant listed marrying an Ann Miller

The only marriage in Hailsham of an Ann Miller is in 1811 when she married a James Richardson.

Sorry to give you a negative answer

Just had another thought:

what about an Ann Akehurst marrying an Osborn, would be around the same time frame?

Hi Alison

Sorry, but negative answer again

Their is an Ann Akehurst marrying a John Wright in Hellingly (next door to Hailsham) in 1817 - but that is the closest

Sorry

Title: John WRIGHT baptised 19 Nov 1797 at Framfield
Post by: peterd500 on Sunday 30 November 14 04:27 GMT (UK)
Are the parents of John WRIGHT known from the marriage?

I have John WRIGHT baptised 19 Nov 1797 at Framfield to Edward & Elizabeth WRIGHT who were travellers.  Edward was baptised in 1753 at Hailsham and in fact a lot of WRIGHT family activity was based in the Hailsham parish area, and it appears that Hellingly next to Hailsham was important as well.

John WRIGHT baptised 1797 at Framfield was brother to my ancestor James WRIGHT who was baptised at Hailsham 1788 but probably born somewhat earlier circa 1779/1781 going by census ages.  These traveller types often had late baptisms, by quite a few years in many cases.  For example, all the siblings of james who appear in census data have ages indicating births considerably earlier than their baptisms by some years.  The baptism of Eliza WRIGHT in 1828 at Hailsham (daughter of James) states that she was born 01/01/1820.  This corresponds well with a removal order of James and his family in 1820 which gives Eliza as a 3 month old daughter.  The family had been arrested for vagrancy (sleeping in the rough) at hailsham and taken to the house of Correction at Lewes.  A settlement examination determined the place of settlement to be Hailsham, and the corresponding removal order forced Hailsham parish to take them back.

The point about the late baptisms is that, on the face of it, Joh WRIGHT baptised 1797 would have been about 20 in 1817, but if baptised much later than his birth then he could have been considerably older.

Hello Peter

I have looked on the Sussex Marriage Index & found this marriage

An Edward Wright married an Elizabeth Wood (by Banns ) at Salehurst on 12 April 1773.
Wit, Jn Wright & Edward Merrit.

This is the only marriage for an Edward marrying an Elizabeth on the SMI

Hope the above helps
