Hi
Not sure which paper I need to look in but I am looking for a funeral/death notice for John George Hall. He died 14 November 1970 in Coledale NSW.
Any help would be appreciated.

It seems Coledale is in the Wollongong region of NSW - not far from Sydney. The notice could be in one of the Sydney papers (SMH, Telegraph - reasonably easily accessible on microfilm) or there is no doubt a local Wollongong paper, but I do not know the name of same. Google would probably find it.

There is the Ryerson Index website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm You may wish to view it and see what is there.
Hope this helps

Hi Reg & Jaki
The Ryerson Index mainly covers 1974 to present (being the period of no access to NSW deaths) - but I do notice that earlier years are now being indexed. Unfortunately only one day in 1970 for SMH. I did find the name of the Wollongong paper from there.
WOLLONGONG - ILLAWARRA MERCURY - Indexes from 2000 0nly.

Did find the name of the paper but not when the indexes started.

Did check the Ryerson Index but didn't realise when it started.
Have the death certificate .. was just going to see if there is a mention of the married names of a couple of the daughters. John George Hall was my great grandfather's brother ... didn't think i would ever find anything about him.

I just rang the offices of Illawarra Mercury. Youl would need to attend at Wollongong Library where they would have it on microfilm.

Thanks for that Leonie. I live near Newcastle so will try to head down that way on my next holidays .... its only a small detour on the way to Canberra ... lol

Hi Jaki
It might be worth a call to your Newcastle library - our Brisbane library has copies on film of some regional Queensland newspapers - could be lucky. They would surely have the SMH and the notice could be there as well - especially if he lived at some time in Sydney.
It's certainly worth checking - I have found many children and married names through these notices.

I hope to get to the library on Tuesday and can look it up for you (i already have it marked in my 'things to do at Library'). So, if you are not going before Tuesday then I will look up for you. I am familiar with the SMH because I have done a lot of research in it. I can see if the Illawarra Mercury is there also.
Cheers

OK Jaki. I have been to the library and found the death notice and the funeral notice in the Illawarra Mercury. I have taken a scan of them for you. I will PM you.

Hope this works. Re your message "John George Hall was my great grandfather's brother ... didn't think i would ever find anything about him." My husband has a John George Hall in his family tree, born Sydney 1965 to William and Agnes. Any connection?

Hi Helen
Sorry no connection. My John George Hall and his brothers were all born in Warwickshire to George and Ann. My lot of Halls didn't arrive in Australia until around 1920.
