I have recorded over 150 cemetery headstone records in Laois. This recording took over 2 years and is the largest in Ireland. These records are available for free if you contact my website and request the cemetery(s) you require. Put your requested cemetery(s) in the message section.

Thanking you.

Hi,
If you would be so kind, could you take a look for any Grady's in Ballaghmore? At the moment I am stuck at my great-grandfather John Grady born about 1856 at a farm (possibly still owned by the Grady family) near Ballaghmore.
Many Thanks,
Mike

Hello, We are looking for a William Rooney, who we know lived in Ballybrophy, but that is all. He probably died in the 1940's or 1950's. Can you help?
Thanks Helen
-
Would you be so kind as to see if there are some Moore's amid your records? They were said to have been in Mountrath but I've never been able to verify more than their presence in Queens County.
I'd be so grateful for any help!
Many thanks,
Brenda

Do have any knowledge of any Rooney's buried probably in the Rathdowney or Garryduff (Errill) areas.

Hi Jack
Any chance you would be able to look for the surname Becton.
Much appreciate your reply.
Seymor
-
Hi Seymor,
I now have over 80 cemetery records around Laois, but no Becton in my records.
I have covered most areas of Laois, but if there is somewhere you would like me to check, I will, in the meantime I will keep checking, and foward names if I come across them.
Best wishes
Jack :)
-
Many thanks.
I believe at some time the Bectons came from Laois but which area I have no idea. They are a hard family to track down.
But I do appreciate your input.
Happy Easter to you and yours
Seymor
-
Hi Michael,
I have only one Rooney in my database.
Sophia Rooney; 10-4-1895 (73)
Errill Roman Catholic cemetery.

Jack
-
Hello, again, Seymor,
Just checked the Laois phone book,
no Becton listed, but 1 in Kildare (Athy)
and 1 in Kilkenny.
Jack
-
Thanks again.
There is a family of Bectons around the Dublin region but we cannot find a connection to one another. Because records for my family are difficult to find we cannot find a connection. Maybe one day.

Would you possibly have any records for Byrne? I am particularly interested in Sir Gregory Byrne, his son Charles Byrne of Byrnesgrove (from Gregory's marriage to Alice Fleming) and any sons or daughters of Charles Byrne, particularly John Byrne who lived at Boleybeg and married Elizabeth Maher.
Also Dudley Edward Byrne and his wife Matilda Hilary
Thank you kindly

Hi Jack - we contacted you in Jan 06 to see if you had seen any headstone with the name William Rooney. We now think he lived in or near Errill, Garryduff.
Possibly died in 1950's or 60's. Have you come across the name since?
Thanks
Helen
-
Hi Helen,
no, have not come across that headstone, the only Rooney I have is;
Rooney Sophia; 10/4/1895 (73years).(Errill RC)
I'm still travelling around and will foward William Rooney if I come across the headstone.
Best wishes

Sean, have you come across any McCanns headstones in Reary, Kilmanman or Clonaslee?
-
Dia Duit Sean,
I have just discovered on a gravestone here in the States that Daniel Nolan was born in "Doonane, Queen's Co Ireland". In a 1920 USA Census it states James Nolan was from "Kildare, Ireland". Though both could be wrong I tend to believe what was written on the memorial stone.
Would you be so kind to look up Nolan's in Doonane.
Thanks Sean

I would be intrested in any Butler's you have in the Aghaboe area, Farren, Killermough, Clough.
If they stopped moving around it would make research a damn sight easier.
Cheers
Peter
-
Hi Peter,
Well, they must have moved very quickly!, I don't have any Butler recorded from Killermogh, Clough, Bordwell, or Ballacolla!
Sorry I cannot be of more assistance, but let me know if I can do anything else,

I have marriages and births in clough and I know they lived for 25 years in Farren, (clough is the nearest RC chuch), about the turn of the 19th century they moved to Dublin.
I wish ancestors could have stayed in one place and kept records that were easy to read, it would make this research a lot easier and probably a lot less fun.
Thanks for your help.

I am trying to find any info on a John Higgs or a Henry Dyer. They both appear on the Griffiths Valuation. Both from the Townland of Knockmay Parish of Clonenagh and Clonagheen. From what I can gather they leased houses from Viscount De Vesci. Have you or anyone come across the names Higgs or Dyer in marriage or burial records ? I have a gt gt grandmother who came to New Zealand [ Anne Dyer ] in the early 1870s, and married a Henry Revell in Wanganui NZ 1863. Her marriage cert quotes her mothers name as Maria Higgs and her fathers name as ? Dyer. Born in Queens County Ireland 1839/40.
Hopefully this John Higgs or Henry Dyer are related to our Anne Dyer. She is a real mystery to all the family here in NZ as no one has any info on her at all. We have been unable to trace any ship she could have come out on, or whether or not she came out on her own.
Any pointers from anyone greatly appreciated

Hi Jack,

During 1998-2000, Dr Jane Lyons of Dublin transcribed stones from a large number of Laois graveyards. She concentrated on stones with pre-1901 dates. Unfortunately, many of those stones are no longer legible and have not been for the last few years and so cannot be absolutely identified in photographs. Have a look at her site to see the graveyards she visited ... www.from-ireland.net/graves/laois/graveindex.htm

Hi Seanmac -
If you still are looking up grave inscriptions , could you look up some in my family .
Samuel Frye -b. circa 1800
Mary Frye ,nee Prior - b. circa 1800
The only record I have of them is their name and where their daughter was born . Their daughter was Anna Frye - b. Dec 1836 in Rathdowney .
Anna ended up marrying a Martin McGrath , and they live in Ballyraggett , Co. Kilkenny . He was a baker/ confectioner .
Thank you,
Megan
-
Hi Seanmac, Thank you so much for your kind offer and the trouble you have taken to amass these records. I am looking for the graves of James Lalor/Lawlor and his wife Mary (nee Corcoran) who married in 1845. Both were R.C. They gave their address as Kyle on the wedding record and on their sons birth record as Castlebail, which I gather are almost adjecent. I would not know what cemetery would be close to these places as I do not live in Ireland. Many Thanks. bridget
-
Hi Bridget,
My records of Kyle cemetery show no Lalor headstones, which may not mean they are buried there as most of the stones cannot be read.
I have not come across Castlebail in my records, so perhaps another area is close by.
Any other information would be of use.
Thanking you,
Jack

Hi Seanmac ,
I am wondering if you have a record in your cemetery index for these names .
Fr. Brendan Sheeran - priest
Fr. Seamus Sheeran - priest , only a memorial stone next to his brother as actual burial was in Port Elizabeth , South Africa
They also had a sister who I believe became a nun and is probably buried with them also .
I don't know their fathers name , but their mothers maiden name was McGrath .
Any info you can give would be appreciated .
Thank you ,
Megan

Thank you so much Seanmac for your swift reply. After a four year search I have only just found out the information from a very basic record, not a proper marriage or birth certificates. I obtained it through The Irish Heritage site which a Rootchatter on here (bless him/her) recommended on line. The Parish/District given was Dunnamaggin. Although the name “Castlebail” was given on the birth record I could not find it on the map but did find a Castlehail in that area. Is this the correct name? Is Dunnamaggin a large City/Town that would hold the records for outlying rural areas? Where would one write to for birth, marriage or death records? Somehow I suspected if I was lucky enough to find these graves the headstone, (if any) would be too old to make the inscription legible. I think I am only left with the option of hopefully finding the death and place of burial on record somewhere. Once again , thank you so much for your help, you are indeed a STAR. Bridget

Hi Jack

Hello,
Have you any Donahue(Donohue), Conway and/or Beach headstones in your records? Michael Donahue and Alice Beach (born early 1800's) came to Randolph, Massachusetts in the 1840's. I have verified that they came from County Laois through Michael's citizenship papers. I do know that Alice's mother was Mary Conway. I don't know Michael's parents names. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thank you...

Hello Seanmac,
Do you have any entries for the Hughes surname within your records? I'm interested in a Loughlin Hughes, who died in 1894 aged 82 (Registered in Q.3). I believe he was Roman Catholic seeing as his son was, and the death was registered in the Mountmellick area.
Thanks
Paul
EDIT: He may have resided in the Ballintogher area, based on his son's stated place of origin on the 1911 England Census.
-
No luck with that one, only Hughes I have from Mountmellick is;
Patrick, who died in 1923, aged 69, and from Castlebrack, and my records from Castlebrack have no Hughes recorded.
Regards,
Jack
-
Oh well. Thanks for that Jack. :)

Hi Jack,
Do you have any Ward family members on your list? I know that they were farmers at Woodbrook, near Emo/Mountmellick, before leaving for Limerick in the late 1890s. Richard Ward is listed as a farmer at Woodbrook in April 1890 on a birth certificate.
All the best,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Below is what I have from Mountmellick, and I must add, these records are from Laois Council records, photocopied and the standard is very poor. Several pages are unreadable so names could be missed.
I found no Ward in Emo.

Hi Spencer,
That's a bit to vague, I've over 120 recorded as cemeteries, not surnames, so I would have to check every cemetery and time will not permit that.
If you check Griffiths Valuation it will give you 9 Spencers in Laois.

Hi Jack,
My Walsh ancestors are from Cuddagh. My gr-gr-grandfather was William Walsh born 1884 and moved to Hoboken, New Jersey here in the States. I see from your cemetery list that two of his brothers are listed: I have a Joseph Walsh born abt 1890 in Cuddagh and a Finton Walsh born abt 1894 in Cuddagh.
Are you aware of any Walsh family still in the area?
Scott
:D

Lavinia,
I am intersted in any Walsh info that you might have from Mountrath. My Walsh family is from Cuddagh.

A check of the local phone book shows no Walsh around that area at the present time. There is a local man who is the Registrar of the local cemetery and he might be of use, but I cannot put his phone number here, so if you contact me by PM I will supply that.

Seanmac,
You are one of the unsung heroes of RootsChat. Everytime I visit the Laois site (and sometimes on my travels through other counties) I come across your posts.
They are a mine of information. Your patience is without end. Thank you for the help and advice you give out so freely.
Dara.

Hello, my family is interested in the cemetery of Killermogh Parish (or close by)and a search of any stone with the name Carter, especially John Carter and his wife, possibly Jane. We are also seeking information about his son Andrew Carter. He lived and had children in a known time span !802-1824.
Your service is deeply appreciated.

seanmac, I am trying to obtain the records you have of burials at or near Killermogh Parish, but have not received them yet. I understood in one post you had sent them to my email address. I tried to follow your instructions as requested, re: providing you my email address and I can do it again if necessary. We are anxious to see the records. Something must have happened, because I received nothing. Awaiting further instructions.

E257C- you are not allowed to post your email address on Rootschat which is why it was removed in your previous post.
Just follow seanmac's directions in the 1st post on this thread:
