Title: CHATERS DURHAM AREA
Post by: chaters on Tuesday 24 August 04 22:12 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me to find the family of my grandfather. I have his marriage certificate and this states his name as Richard Chaters, born 1887, married 1913.  His father was William Chaters deceased by 1913. Can anyone find a Chaters family in 71/81/91/1901/Census.  The area would be durham or the surounding area.  Both William and Richard were coal miners.  Any help would be appriciated.
Kathy :(

I have looked at 1891. There are two families headed by coal miners in County Durham, but spelled variously 'Chaytors' and 'Chayters'. Both heads of family were born in Coundon, neither called William. But the place of birth might be a clue where to look further.

Thanks for your interest, I have now found them on the 1901 census decoder, but still cant find them 91/81/71 I am sure the spelling of Chaters changed each time a census was caried out.  Some examples are Chaytor, Chayter, Chayters, even Shater has cropped up but I still cant pin point them.  I have looked on LDS site for 1881 and cant find them.  I dont have an account with Ancestory to check 1891, if anyone has the time could you have a look please, sometimes two pair of eyes can find what one cant. Thanks everyone, let me know if anything turns up.
Best wishes
Kathy

There's just a Ralph CHATERS with family on the 1891 in south Shields; he's a brass moulder. Any good?

There's also a whole family with the name CHAYTOR, father George, a signalman.

Hi everyone, I am still looking for this family in any census before 1891, this is the last census I have found them. The following information has been taken from that;
1891

Chator, William 35 B. Auckland, Durham Head Heworth Durham 1856
Chator, Sarah Jane 33 Oldhill, Staffordshire Wife Heworth Durham 1858
Chator, William 8 Maryport, Cumberland Son Heworth Durham  1883
Chator, Richard 4 Maryport, Cumberland Son Heworth Durham  1886
Chator, Sarah Jane 2 Bill quay, Durham Daughter Heworth Durham  1889.

As you can see the spelling of Chaters is different although I am sure they are the family I am looking for.  Thanks to everyone that has spent time looking for my lost rellies, If you come across them on your travels please let me know.
Thanks
Kathy
